ABOUT
We view the business of investment management as a noble one, involving a sacred trust given to the investment manager by the client. As investment managers, we are supremely focused on constructing liquid portfolios that are positioned to achieve strong returns over the long run while being robust against market drawdowns in the short run.
Jirisan Capital focuses on multi-asset investing in liquid markets. Understanding the structural relationships between asset classes and the dynamic interactions among global capital markets provides a distinct edge to thrive in market turbulence. Diverse exposures to various risk premia, conditioned on fundamental and technical indicators, help to reduce drawdown potential.
FOUNDER
Gerald (Jerry) Hwang founded Jirisan Capital with the belief that global multi-asset investing requires a holistic understanding of not only each asset class in isolation, but also their dynamic interaction in aggregate. Jerry has lived and worked in Asia, Europe, and the U.S. in the course of acquiring 20+ years of experience across equities, fixed income, and derivatives. His work in fundamental and quantitative analytics have been applied to both active and passive investment mandates. He was most recently a portfolio manager at Matthews Asia where he worked on the Strategic Income fund from 2011-2016. He managed risk exposures in fixed income, equity, convertible, and FX asset classes.
He was also lead portfolio manager on $6 BN of AUM at Vanguard, while managing callable agency bond allocations across a further $200 BN. Product type coverage included ETFs, separate accounts, and mutual funds. He also designed, managed, and traded the foreign exchange component of Vanguard’s alternative beta harvesting strategy.
Prior to Vanguard, his tenure at Morgan Stanley encompassed experience on both the sell-side, as an emerging markets analyst, and the buy-side, as a member of the Customized Fixed Income team. Prior to Morgan Stanley, he was the Director of Equity Research in Budapest for the National Commercial Bank. He began his career as an equity derivatives analyst at D.E. Shaw. He graduated from The Wharton School with an MBA in Finance and Yale University with a B.A. in Comparative Literature. He holds the CFA charter.
